Fire damages home in Zion; 3 dogs rescued

— A house was badly damaged and three dogs were rescued during a fire Friday afternoon on state Route 64.

No one was home at the time of the blaze, nor could they be contacted, said Chris Harter, Walker Township assistant fire chief.

Crews from four area fire companies battled the fire, which Harter said began at about 2 p.m. at 1277 Nittany Valley Drive, near Hull’s Well Drilling. A neighbor called in the fire after seeing smoke.

“At this time, we’re not sure where the fire started,” Harter said. “What we got is an addition built off an addition, so we’re not really sure where the fire originated.”

Fire crews from Walker Township, Pleasant Gap, Bellefonte Undine and Milesburg responded.

Firefighters smashed several windows and tore open a wall near the one-story home’s foundation.

“That was where the concentration of heat and fire was,” Harter said, “so we had to remove those walls so that we wouldn’t get any more extension up through.”

He said when crews arrived, some flames were showing; however, smoke continued to emanate from the house more than an hour after the initial call.

One by one, firefighters carried three dogs wrapped in curtains and blankets out of the house and into a neighbor’s garage, where they were treated by EMS personnel. The dogs were transferred to an ambulance.

Traffic was detoured for more than an hour while fire crews worked the scene.

The cause of the fire was not known.
