CDT staffers named Golden Quills finalists

Eight Centre Daily Times newsroom staffers are among the finalists in the 2014 Golden Quill Awards, sponsored by the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania.

The CDT’s honorees stretch across news, sports, photography and opinion writing.

Winners will be announced at the Golden Quill Awards dinner May 22 at the Sheraton Station Square, Pittsburgh.

Finalists, by category, are:

•  Spot/breaking news: Chris Rosenblum, Chip Minemyer; “IED strikes medic”; coverage of the Adam Hartswick bomb incident in Afghanistan.

•  Sports story: Gordon Brunskill, Britney Milazzo; “Great day for Penn State”; coverage of opening night at Penn State’s Pegula Ice Arena.

•  Sports story: Travis Johnson; “Solid footing: Hackenberg honed pocket poise with help of military academy”; Penn State football feature.

•  News illustration: David Kubarek; “The Pegula Ice Arena”; full-page graphic for opening of arena.

•  Spot news photography: Christopher Weddle; “Blaze tears through Potter Twp. business”; photo published Nov. 11, 2013.

•  Feature photography: Nabil Mark; “Slippery Snow”; photo published Feb. 27, 2013.

•  Editorials: Chip Minemyer; “On the brink of another crisis with ‘essential’ elected leaders,” “Taking drugs, bringing grief,” “Frazier’s outburst did more harm than good.”
