High school girls’ softball: Baney‘s performance on the mound leads Bellefonte over Central

From CDT staff reportsMay 1, 2014

— Tara Baney tossed a six-hitter as the Bellefonte softball team avenged an earlier season loss with a 5-3 victory over Central on Thursday at O’Leary Field.

Baney (3-1) walked three and struck out five against the Lady Dragons, who had beaten the Lady Red Raiders 11-6 earlier.

“She did a great job,” Bellefonte coach Gregg Kohlhepp said of Baney. She’s gotten better and better as the season has went on. Our defense was exceptional.”

The Lady Raiders (8-4) broke out on top with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Angela Capparelle had an RBI single. Two more scored on RBI groundout by Bainey and Sarah Menna’s fielder’s choice grounder.

Bellefonte tacked on two more in the fourth. Vanessa Cooper belted an RBI double to deep center field and Olivia Ripka followed with another RBI double. Ripka, who singled and scored in the first, was the only player on either team with multiple hits.

The Lady Raiders played the game in honor of Dylan Crunick, a former Bellefonte baseball and basketball player who died from cancer in late January.
