Letter to the editor | Hunger, poverty intertwined

May 2, 2014

I would like to share my ideas on poverty with my fellow State College residents.

I think President Barack Obama has done a great job of trying to address poverty through health care.

Hunger and poverty are very different things. Hunger is an issue of people often not getting the correct food quality and they are too often becoming obese.

It is surprising to think of an obese person as someone suffering from hunger, but they can be. They suffer from poverty and, therefore, poor food choices and options.

Poverty is a problem that can sometimes be traced to drug use or mental illness, but some hard-working people are just poor and, therefore, hungry.

Hunger and poverty are linked. Many people are angry about the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) because it’s taking their tax money.

But really, it’s an important way that President Obama is addressing poverty and hunger in our country.
