Two trucks crash, tie up I-99 traffic

From CDT staff reportsMay 2, 2014

A tractor-trailer crash complicated travel on Interstate 99 at about 4:15 a.m. Friday.

The crash occurred about a mile north of the Bellwood exit in Antis Township, Blair County.

State police at Hollidaysburg said George Richter, 56, of Connelsville, was driving a fully loaded 2007 Freightliner southbound on I-99 behind Robert Monahan, 53, of Hollidaysburg, at the wheel of a PennDOT dump truck. When Richter attempted to pass, the front of his vehicle struck the left rear of the PennDOT truck.

When the PennDOT truck came to a rest in the west berm about 180 feet down the road, Richter’s truck skidded and slid sideways, striking a guiderail, then sliding down an embankment and coming to rest more than 300 feet after leaving the roadway.

Police said Allegheny Trucking Co. would be at the scene for “several hours” to remove the truck from the embankment.

Motorists traveling southbound on I-99 are advised to be cautious between the Tipton and Bellwood exits. PennDOT is reporting a lane restriction between mile markers 41 and 43 until 3:30 p.m.
