High school boys’ tennis: State College’s Mat Wherley and Sam Wherley in District 6 Class AAA doubles finals

May 2, 2014

— State College’s Mat and Sam Wherley were the third seed at the start of the District 6 Class AAA boys’ doubles tennis championships on Friday.

The Little Lion duo advanced to play the top-seeded team of Chad Allender and Ryan Good from Altoona on Saturday at Leopold Rec Center at 10 a.m.

“Sam & Matt played aggressively through both of their matches and came out with the wins,” State College coach Jane Borden said, “Their semifinal match put them up against a solid Altoona team, who challenged them from the baseline & at the net. Sam & Matt's hard work and focus paid off in dividends today and we look forward to another tough match tomorrow in the finals against the Altoona #1 team.”

The Wherleys opened with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Mifflin County’s Cody Donaldson and Nate Koller in the quarterfinals. They then defeated the Mountain Lions’ second doubles team of Mustafa Ahmad and Matt Eiman in the semfinals 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

State College’s other doubles team of Luke Plowden and Dan Shull played in the opening round and defeated Central Mountain’s Zach High and Jake Piergallini 6-1, 6-0. Ploweden and Shull were then eliminated by Allender and Good 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
