High school softball: State College edges Central Dauphin East in extra innings

May 2, 2014

— State College turned three double plays, including one to end the game, as the Lady Little Lions outlasted Central Dauphin East 5-3 in nine innings Friday.

Sharayah Simco opened the ninth with a walk, moved to second on Megan Robert’s bunt and scored on Alyssa Shedlock’s RBI single. Shedlock scored on Lexi Mattivi’s two-out single.

CD East had a runner at second with one out in the bottom of the inning, but Lady Little Lion shortstop Corey Marfitt speared a liner and threw to second baseman Robert to double off the runner to end the game. State College also turned double plays in the fifth and sebenth innings.

Karli Nolan (3-4) went the distance, allowing eight hits, while striking out three and walking two.

“We learning to play defense behind her,” State College coach Mike Harper said. “We’re supporting her more now. ... We’re playing better together and that will be important in the next two weeks.”

Simco blasted a homer, her first of the season in the third inning. Ellie Frey had an RBI single in a two-run fourth.

Shedlock led the Lady Little Lions with three hits. Mattivi and Marfitt added two each.
