Penn State softball: Fighting llini shut out Nittany Lions

— Illinois pitcher Brandi Needham fired a four-hitter as the Fighting Illini blanked Penn State 5-0 at Nittany Lion Softball Park on Friday.

Needham (15-14) did not walk a batter and struck out two in the triumph for the Fighting Illini (21-25 overall, 5-16 Big Ten).

Illinois hurt Nittany Lion starter Marlaina Laubach with the longball. Jess Perkins hit a two-run homer in the fourth, while Allie Bauch and Ruby Rivera added solo shots in the seventh.

Macy Jones’ triple was the lone extra-base hit for the Nittany Lions (14-32, 5-16). The two teams meet again at 3 p.m. Saturday.
