Letter to the editor | Supporting young women

May 3, 2014

I have been a board member of the Jana Marie Foundation since its inception in 2012. In that time, I’ve seen the impact this organization has in our community.

Founded by my daughter, Marisa Vicere Brown, in loving memory of her sister, the foundation strives to empower young people, especially young women, to make positive choices, practice self-respect and maintain healthy relationships by providing opportunities for personal growth and creative expression.

Our educational programs work with schools, families and friends to combat depression, substance abuse, suicide and related social challenges by building support networks and giving community members access to relevant resources and information.

Among our initiatives, we co-sponsor the monthly Straight Talk programs for parents and caregivers at Mount Nittany Middle School. We also are partnering with Penn State Public Media to create a related video series.

Our scholarship program supports opportunities for young women in junior and senior high school to express themselves through artistic and creative endeavors.

In the words of a recent recipient, “I think providing youth with a healthy escape from the outside world and providing them with a way to express themselves positively is extremely fundamental.”

Join me at CentreGives.org to support Jana Marie Foundation.
