Donations are being accepted by the Boalsburg Cemetery Assocation at P.O. Box 443, Boalsburg, PA 16827.

Residents continue to rally around the Boalsburg Cemetery after vandals struck overnight Saturday, causing more than $100,000 in damage.

While State College police said they have no new information to report in their investigation, efforts from locals to help rectify the destruction are growing.

Pete High, president of the Boalsburg Cemetery Association, said there have been many offers of help to perform the labor of repairing the damage, as well as people reaching out with offers of donations.

The efforts have not stopped there.

A “Save the Graves” campaign was started on crowdsourcing website GoFundMe.com on Tuesday with a goal of $50,000. By 4 p.m. Wednesday, donors had contributed $540. An affiliated Facebook page indicates donations are being accepted by both Zion Lutheran Church and St. John’s United Church of Christ, as well.

Bonfatto’s restaurant owner David Letterman is hoping to be able to give thousands with a fundraiser May 16 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Boalsburg Fire Company selling pulled pork and chicken dinners. The 34-year resident of Boalsburg hopes to have volunteers step up to help work the fundraiser, as well as having people offer to donate food for the event. Anyone interested in lending a hand, or contributing to the event, is asked to call Bonfatto’s at 353-3330.

“We’re a family business. For 95 years, the community has helped us and we help back,” said Letterman, who wants to sell out with 1,000 dinners. “This is just an outrage, a travesty.”

Boalsburg Cemetery is historically significant, with a claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day.
