Penn State softball: Ohio State ends Nittany Lions’ season in Big Ten tournament

— The Penn State softball season came to an end Thursday afternoon as the Nittany Lions lost 6-2 to Ohio State in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament at Northwestern’s Drysdale Field.

Buckeyes starter Olivia O’Reilly held Penn State to four hits and two walks with two unearned runs over 6 1/3 innings, striking out three.

Karlie Habitz was 2 for 3 with a six-inning RBI double for Penn State (14-35), who closed the season losing its last 12 games. a Macy Jones sacrifice fly brought in the team’s other run in the sixth.

Caitlin Conrad belted a three-run homer in Ohio State’s four-run second inning while Anna Kirk and Taylor Watkins each had a pair of hits.

The Buckeyes will meet Nebraska in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Before the game, sophomore outfielder Lexi Knief was named second-team All-Big Ten. She led the Nittany Lions in seven offensive categories entering Thursday’s game, including batting (.382), runs (37), hits (58), triples (6), total bases (80), slugging (.526) and on-base percentage (.457).
