From CDT staff reportsMay 10, 2014

— The Big Ten’s best team was too much for Penn State, with Indiana blanking the Nittany Lions 10-0 Friday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

The Hoosiers (33-12, 16-2 Big Ten), who are ranked No. 4 in the national RPI and anywhere from No. 9 to 20 in four major national polls, pounded out 14 hits including five for extra bases.

Kyle Schwarber tripled with one out in the first inning and scored on a Scott Donley single two batters later in the first inning and Indiana never looked back. Brad Hartong was 3 for 4 with a triple, Donley had a single and double along with three RBIs and Sam Travis belted a solo home run.

J.J. White was 3 for 4 with a double to account for half of the hits for the Nittany Lions (17-26, 5-12), whose losing streak reached a dozen games.

Joey DeNato (11-1) pitched six shutout innings, striking out three and walking one for the win, while Thomas Belcher pitched three innings of relief, striking out four, for his third save.

Tim Dunn (2-3) also pitched six innings in the loss.

The teams meet again at 2 p.m. Saturday for Game 2 of the three-game series.
