Letter to the editor | Story’s ending is just ducky

May 16, 2014

While going shopping at Wegmans recently, we found a mother duck and nine hatchlings in a puddle right in the middle of the driving lane in front of the store! We scooted them off into the bushes, but when we were done shopping, we found them again — trying to scale the wall in front of Dick’s!

I want to say a huge thank you to the several people who helped my husband and me round up the babies and get them into a critter carrier. Unfortunately, we were unable to catch the mother.

I was ready to take the babies to Centre Wildlife Care, where I am a volunteer. When — bingo — we were able to locate the mother again!

We set the carrier down where the mother would be able to hear them calling her. A short time later, here came mom up out of the water, calling to the babies! All of the babies dutifully followed her back down into the water!

I’d like the folks involved to know that the story had the perfect ending — thanks to their help! Again — thank you!
