Penn State wrestling: Retherford excels at World Team Trials

— Zain Retherford got Penn State’s contingent of wrestlers competing in World Team Trial action off to a good start on Friday.

Retherford, who wrapped up his first All-America season as a true freshman in March, won a silver medal in freestyle action of the FILA Junior World Team Trials with a runner-up finish to Aaron Pico of Titan Mercury Wrestling Club.

Competing for the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club, Retherford dropped his first match to Pico 3-0 and fell 5-1 in the second match at 66 kilograms.

Former Penn State standouts David Taylor and Ed Ruth are scheduled to compete in U.S. World Team Trial action on Saturday and Sunday at 74 kilograms and 84 kilograms, respectively.
