Letter to the editor | Nuclear is no answer

June 12, 2014

The promotion of nuclear power and the discouraging of alternative energy efforts by Forrest Remick (“ Pennsylvania must pursue a new energy strategy,” June 10) is very disturbing given that he is blind to the dangers of nuclear power and seems to have forgotten the disasters at Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and the more recent tragedy in Japan, as well as some smaller and less well-known leakages of radioactive isotopes.

His statistics about the lower production of electrical energy by wind and solar power ignore the fact that the nuclear companies, as well as big oil companies, have stood in the way of development of alternatives. He admits that nuclear plants have had some economic failures.

It is sad that the very knowledgeable Judith Johnsrud is not alive to counter his arguments about the safety and cleanliness of the production of nuclear energy.
