Two injured in Spring Township accident

— Spring Township police are calling it a case of “distracted driving” that left two injured in a two-vehicle crash just after 11:30 a.m. Thursday on East College Avenue near the Hawbaker stone quarry.

Detective Dale Moore said Allanah Fleck, 17, was driving west near the 700 block of East College in a Honda sedan when she crossed the median and struck an eastbound Dodge minivan driven by Sally Toner, of Mingoville.

The van then spun around and came to a rest on the south side of the road facing west.

The car ended up in a ditch, and the driver was trapped, Moore said.

Pleasant Gap Fire Chief Lou Brungard said it took about 15 minutes for first-responders to free Fleck from the damaged car.

Both drivers were transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center after the crash, and Fleck was then taken by helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.

On Thursday night, Fleck was transferred out of the emergency department and admitted to the children’s hospital.

Moore said Toner, 76, sustained a broken arm in the crash.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, but Moore said Fleck could be charged.

Kylee Gardner said she didn’t see the accident happen, but she and a friend were the first to call 911.

“We just drove up on it and immediately called,” Gardner said.

A Hawbaker safety patrol directed traffic while part of the eastbound lane on East College was closed for about two hours.

Pleasant Gap and Boalsburg fire companies, Bellefonte and Spring Township police departments, and Mount Nittany Medical Center paramedics responded.
