— Utility and site work has begun on a 2.5-acre plot off Struble Road that will house a new Veterans Affairs outpatient clinic.

But the developers are still waiting for a building permit before construction can start on the 17,500-square-foot facility.

Marr Development is hoping to have plans approved no later than this fall.

Nancy Marr, president and owner of Marr Development in Bloomsburg, and Kent Baker, College Township engineer, said that this is a relocation of the VA facility in Ferguson Township.

Marr said crews broke ground two weeks ago at the 2581 Clyde Ave. location, which is twice the size of the VA’s current space in Cato Park.

The Clyde Avenue clinic will offer more specialty services in addition to primary care, such as flu shots and shingles vaccines for about 4,000 patients, said Andrea Young, public affairs officer for the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center in Altoona.

“It’s going to be an amazing change,” Young told the CDT in March. “Because right now, we don’t have enough space for the staff we have.”

Baker said the College Township Council approved the project in March.

Marr Development was awarded the project in July 2013.

Last year, the VA completed a similar project in DuBois, remodeling a commercial building into an 18,000-square-foot clinic.
