Centre County unemployment rate falls to lowest level in 6 years

From CDT staff reportsJuly 1, 2014

Centre County’s unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest level in six years, according to data released Tuesday by the state.

The county’s jobless rate dropped from 4.2 to 4.1 percent in May, the lowest in the state. That is the county’s lowest rate since May 2008, the state Department of Labor and Industry said.

The unemployment rate in neighboring counties ranged from 5.5 percent in Blair to 7.9 in Huntingdon.

In the past year, according to the Labor Department, manufacturing and local government were the only sectors of the county’s economy to post job losses. Both fell by 100. The federal government and professional/business services were the only industries to show gains over both the month and year.

The state’s jobless rate was 5.6 percent in May, while the national rate stood at 6.3 percent.
