Pools, parks offer spots to beat summer heat in Centre County

Even before Tuesday was recorded as the hottest day of the year so far, locals responded to the sweltering sun by flocking to cooler areas in town.

The Welch and Park Forest community pools were packed with families desperate to escape the heat.

“The last couple of days have been very busy,” Welch pool Manager Shawn Lelko said. “The pool has been packed with lots of kids coming in to swim.”

It was the same across town in Park Forest.

“The pool has absolutely been the most crowded it’s been all summer over the last few days,” Manager Megan Mejia said.

With a high of 90 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, Tuesday was the hottest day of the year so far in State College — two degrees warmer than on June 17, which had held the record.

Some people chose to cool off in the shade and chilly waters of Spring Creek Park.

“We thought we’d come out here and just enjoy the water because it’s very hot out,” said Nicole Krahling, of Boalsburg, who was there with her son, Ian, 8.

“It’s a hot day, so it’s cooling,” Ian said. “I’m just floating with my friends.”

Nicole Hanson, of State College, took her three children to the park.

“The kids wanted to go swimming,” Hanson said, “so I thought Spring Creek was the perfect place to take them.”

Hanson’s daughter Alex, 8, was floating down the river on a pink raft that the girl said felt “nice, except for the rocks.”

Although a summer storm at about 3 p.m. drove most people indoors, it didn’t banish the hot weather.

The heat will not subside in the near future; a high of 90 degrees is predicted for Wednesday.
