Penn State football: Lucas named to Jim Thopre Award watch list

July 11, 2014

Junior cornerback Jordan Lucas has been named to the Jim Thorpe Award watch list, Penn State announced Friday.

It is Lucas’ second preseason watch list nomination this summer. He also is a preseason candidate for the Bednarik Award, given to the nation’s top defensive player.

The Jim Thorpe Award, established in 1986, is given to the nation’s top defensive back.

Lucas had a breakout sophomore season in 2013. He started all 12 games and tied for third in the Big Ten with 16 passes defended. Lucas’ three interceptions tied for the team lead and he led Penn State with 13 pass breakups.

The metropolitan New York City product was third on the team with 64 tackles, leading the squad with 45 solo stops. He also recorded 4.5 tackles for loss (minus-20 yards), one sack and forced two fumbles.
