Penn State football: Hackenberg named to O’Brien watchlist

Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg is among 33 players on the watch list for the 2014 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award.

Hackenberg is one of seven sophomores on the list for the award given to the nation’s top quarterback. Hackenberg is also on the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award, honoring the country’s player of the year.

Former Penn State quarterbacks Todd Blackledge and Kerry Collins won the O’Brien Award in 1982 and 1994, respectively.

Hackenberg passed for 2,955 yards and threw 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions last season.

Home opener set for noon

Penn State’s homer opener against Akron is set to kickoff at noon on Sept. 6.

The game will be televised on ABC regionally.

The Nittany Lions have gone 4-0 against Akron, winning 31-7 in the last meeting between the teams in 2009.

Penn State opens the season Aug. 30 against Central Florida in Dublin, Ireland.

Bolden transferring to Eastern Michigan

Former Penn State quarterback Rob Bolden is transferring from Louisiana State to Eastern Michigan, according to reports by Spartan Nation and TigerBait.com.

Bolden transferred to LSU in 2012 and did not play one snap for the Tigers. Bolden played in 20 games at Penn State, throwing for seven touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
