State College cancels Friday classes, activities after threat

The State College Area School District has canceled classes for Friday after a threatening note was found in the high school North Building, district officials announced Thursday evening. The district said in a news release that it is taking this step out of an abundance of caution in light of Monday’s shooting at Virginia Tech and the anniversary Friday of the 1999 Columbine High School attack. The note, which was found in a bathroom late Thursday afternoon, threatened violence on Friday. State College police are investigating the threat, and Police Chief Tom King said the credibility has not yet been determined, according to the release. In addition to classes, school-sponsored activities also have been called off for Friday. Anyone with information on the threat is asked to contact police at 234-7150, submit an anonymous tip at www.statecollegepa.us or call the high school’s anonymous tipline at 235-4999. A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.
