closeIt’s a festive time for family and friends — the Fourth of July holiday, celebrated on Saturday this year — making for a terrific weekend in Centre County.
Have a safe one, and that means taking extra care if around sparklers and fireworks.
It’s estimated that 10,000 people are injured each year by fireworks while celebrating our nation’s birthday.
“Every year I see patients of all ages with burns or other serious injuries that could have been avoided by what I call common-sense safety,” said Michael Turturro, president of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians and a Pitts-burgh- area physician.
Turturro offers a reminder to be extra careful in handling sparklers, pointing out that more than half of fireworks injuries to children are caused by sparklers.
Here are some tips from the National Council on Fireworks Safety: Remain standing when using sparklers, never hold or light more than one sparkler at time, drop spent sparklers in a bucket of water, never hand a lighted sparkler to another person.
Turturro also makes a great suggestion perfectly suited for Happy Valley: “Don’t handle fireworks yourself; go see a show.”
The Central PA 4th Fest invites you to join an estimated 70,000 people for activities at Penn State and a spectacular fireworks display.
Enjoy it, and be safe on the festive Fourth.
