closeMore than 3,300 Scouts, leaders and other volunteers will be in neighborhoods throughout Centre, Huntingdon, Juniata and Mifflin counties Saturday distributing collection bags and flyers for their annual “Scouting for Food” drive.
They’ll be back Oct. 31 to pick up what they hope are more than 150,000 nonperishable food items to help stock local pantries.
Consider helping if you can. The need is great, and the timing is important with the holidays and winter just around the corner.
“What makes this year’s campaign so critical is more individuals and families are in need of our help, feeling the impact of a negative economy — whether it is a job loss, an illness or other unexpected emergency,” wrote Jim Kennedy, Scout executive for the Juniata Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America, in a column that will be published Saturday on Views as part of the United Way column series.
“Private donations such as those from Scouting for Food will account for more than 70 percent of the need our local food banks have to meet the demand. Delays on passage of the state budget and other unusual factors have significantly increased the impact your donation can have.”
What’s in need? Peanut butter, pasta, tuna, cake mixes and other nonperishables. Check the donation flyer that will be handed out Saturday for ideas.
“Scouting for Food is not about the Boy Scouts; it is about our communities; to raise awareness and help those in need; to help make a difference in the lives of our friends, neighbors, co-workers, possibly even a family member,” Kennedy wrote. “Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are the vehicle to help ‘Do a Good Turn’ and provide a service to our neighbors.”
Donating food doesn’t get easier than giving it to a Scout. Look for them on the next two Saturdays.
