closeElizabeth Goreham and Joe Wakeley, the candidates for State College major, share experience as borough council member and president.
Goreham’s experience is current, Wakeley’s is from the 1980s.
She’s involved in all of the issues of today and sees a real need for the cash-strapped borough to obtain approval from the state for new revenue sources.
He was involved in all of the issues 30 years ago and deserves credit for public improvements of the day. While he is not well-versed in today’s issues, he said he hopes to find ways to help expand the borough’s tax base.
This is the ballot choice State College voters have as they consider who is best to take office after 15 great years of service by the late Bill Welch.
Do they choose the ultimate insider who seeks the mayor’s job at a time that she would be term-limited off Borough Council? Or do they choose the ultimate outsider who once was an ultimate insider?
In separate interviews with the Centre Daily Times editorial board, both candidates said they wanted to represent State College and be its ambassador. Both said they’d work closely with Penn State officials to improve town and gown relations.
Goreham, a Democrat, said she wanted to “build on the successes” of Mayor Welch and vowed to continue her work with other elected officials on the Pennsylvania League of Cities.
Wakeley, a Republican, said he decided to run when approached by the party and sees the mayor’s role as a link between council and the community.
The mayor runs council meetings and can veto measures that win council approval, but otherwise is the face of the borough in every respect. State College voters have a clear choice on Nov. 3.
