As a registered Republican in Centre County, I was disappointed in my only choice for district attorney in the May primary. I am tired of reading about the controversy surrounding the current office.
A district attorney needs to be trusted by the people and needs to stay out of the headlines. I want someone who will put the law first and see all sides of criminal issues, which is why I wrote in Democrat Stacy Parks Miller for district attorney on May 19 and why I will vote for her on Nov. 3.

Creationism doesn’t belong
At the League of Women Voters forum Oct. 6, five candidates for four State College Area school board positions were asked for their views on the teaching of creationism in the schools. Only one candidate, Brian Kaleita, said creationism should be taught.
Penni Fishbaine, David Hutchinson, Jim Leous and Gowen Roper all agreed that creationism does not belong in the science classroom. Let’s keep it that way.

Candidate won’t disappoint
Stacy Parks Miller is by far the best candidate for Centre County district attorney. I work in State College and have had the privilege of getting to know her as a person and as an attorney.
Her compassionate nature gives her the necessary insight to deal with each individual case, while her dedication and drive give her what is needed to protect the people of this county. I encourage everyone to vote for her in the upcoming election. You will not be disappointed.

Proven experience
It’s always good to see a boss recommend a former employee (Tom Corbett’s endorsement of District Attorney Michael Madeira’s re-election). I was dismayed, however, to see the potshots from the state Democratic chairman in Harrisburg, who obviously didn’t have a clue as to what happens here but is taking aim at an opponent for political purposes with no basis in fact.
Next thing you know Stacy Parks Miller will be calling in the big guns from the Obama campaign to try to politicize a race that should be more about the safety of our county and those of us who live here than what political party one belongs to.
This county is a great place to live, and Madeira’s record of successful prosecutions is not just keeping it that way, but making it even safer. I want someone who knows how to do the job right. I’m voting for Madeira based on his proven experience.

Vote for sound judgment
We Harris Township residents reside in an idyllic setting, a community free of many of the stresses that plague other areas.
This community exists because we have elected supervisors who have listened to residents’ wishes and have made decisions based on our values.
Again, we have the opportunity to elect individuals we think will make the decisions regarding the future we want. Our community continues to change. The issue becomes controlling the change based on planning, free of personal agendas, by supervisors functioning with dedication, knowledge, experience and a willingness to listen.
Since 1996, Dennis Hameister has demonstrated that he listens and makes decisions that are based on sound judgment. He brings experience, leadership, dedication and no personal agenda other than to serve us well. I encourage you to support Hameister, a proven, qualified caring candidate for supervisor.

Two for Goreham
Elizabeth Goreham has been a friend, neighbor and, for several years, our advocate on the Borough Council. She has always been sensitive to neighborhood issues and willing to listen to all concerned.
Communications among the students and homeowners in the Highlands have greatly improved under her leadership. As mayor, she will continue her work to enhance our life in State College. We enthusiastically endorse her candidacy.

Stacy Parks Miller is the best choice for district attorney. We need a proven manager.
She will do the job right and won’t waste our money, as is happening now with cases getting thrown out after a lot of money has been spent. She has experience as a criminal lawyer on defense and prosecution. She is hardworking and will look out for us — our safety and our taxes.
On a personal note, I have talked with a Clearfield County commissioner who confirmed that she did an excellent job as an assistant district attorney when she worked there. I hope we can count on your vote for Parks Miller on Nov. 3.

No more Beaver Canyons
State College Borough Council soon will vote on a proposed rezoning of the West End between Atherton Street and the former O.W. Houts property. This Planning Commission zoning ordinance opens about an eight-block area to intense development of high-density student rental apartments.
At the packed public comment session Oct. 5, residents described the effect this dramatic zoning change will have on the town and the adjacent neighborhood. Residents have a vision for the future of State College and it does not include another Beaver Canyon.
Two council candidates, Charles Gable and Ron Madrid, are current members of the Planning Commission. Their support for such a seriously flawed plan makes me question their commitment to improving the quality of life in State College. Our town does not need leadership that values developer profits over the wishes of residents. This is an important election for State College; please vote on Nov. 3.

Wrong person on the job
The District Attorney’s Office is crucial to the administration of justice in our community. The current district attorney has shown that he is not up to that task.
A convicted killer may go free because a judge says the district attorney did not know the law. A suspected rapist is free because the district attorney allowed him to leave the country before his trial. Powerful friends called the district attorney for help after being sought by our police. An assistant district attorney was charged with sexually harassing a witness. How much does it take before we know we have the wrong person in the job?
Stacy Parks Miller is an experienced prosecutor and manager. She is the right person for the job, and I am voting for her.

She'll move us forward
The tragic death of Mayor Bill Welch marked the end of an old era and the beginning of a new one.
I believe that Elizabeth Goreham is the face of the next period of State College history. I have served with her on Borough Council for the past two years and have seen firsthand the depth of her knowledge of local government and local people. Her ability to work constructively with a wide variety of government, business and university leaders has been a revelation.
As mayor, she will continue applying those skills to moving State College forward. She will be mayor for all our people and all our neighborhoods.
I urge all residents of our borough to support her in the Nov. 3 election.

A proven track record
Having recently read the district attorney candidates’ responses on Oct. 10, I began to think about the two candidates and their career paths.
Michael Madeira has spent his career prosecuting criminals and defending victims of crime. His opponent has spent most of her career defending criminals. While I certainly understand that criminals need someone to defend them, I’m not sure I want someone who so easily flips back and forth between defending rapists, drug dealers and drunken drivers to prosecuting them as Centre County’s district attorney.
I would rather have Madeira. He is committed to putting criminals behind bars and has a proven track record of keeping us safe from the very criminals his opponent defends.
If I am ever the victim of a crime, I don’t want to wonder if my DA has the best interest of the victim or the criminal in mind.
Madeira has my vote because of his consistent stand for justice.

New approach needed
After relocating to Centre County from out of state, I made a point of researching the local government.
I contacted a few offices and, quite frankly, was frustrated. The one bright spot, however, was Stacy Parks Miller, who is running for district attorney.
She truly cares about this county and providing justice, safety and fairness for all of us. She is well versed in law and loves what she does, always giving 100 percent. She is unpretentious, ethical, realistic and has heart-felt concern for the people. When you factor in her law expertise, professionalism and intelligence, you will have a fresh, new, focused approach to serving the county as district attorney.
We really need her; it’s time.

Vote no to status quo
A new direction is needed in the District Attorney’s Office — one that will lead to improved safety and a better lifestyle for all. Stacy Parks Miller will provide that direction.
For the past four years, the office has had botched convictions, personnel dysfunction and a lack of leadership. Centre County is a fine place to live and crime is low, but improvements must be made.
Parks Miller knows how to do the job. She learned how as assistant district attorney in Clearfield County and she will be able to step right in. Criminals commit crimes because they think they can get away with it. A competent DA will change that notion.
On Nov. 3, Parks Miller needs your help. You may vote for the status quo or vote for the responsive leadership of Parks Miller.

Well-qualified candidate
What we don’t need for Harris Township supervisors are people who buy farms and then develop them. What we don’t need are supervisors with personal agendas. What we don’t need are supervisors who pass ordinances that penalize everyone, as in the septic tank issue, instead of targeting and fixing specific problem areas.
What we need are modest, levelheaded, clear-thinking supervisors who will work to improve the community with the least amount of impact on the people who live in it. I think Fred DiMuccio best meets these criteria and I will vote for him on Nov. 3.
