closeJAMESTOWN, N.Y. — The Jamestown Jammers were in a generous mood Tuesday evening.
Two errors and some pitching control problems by the Jammers helped the State College Spikes to an 8-1 win at Diethrick Park.
Spikes first baseman Aaron Baker was 2-for- 4 with a triple, but neither of his hits led to either of his two RBIs. In fact, just half of State College’s runs were batted in.
Jamestown pitchers walked eight Spikes, threw four wild pitches and hit a batter. Starter Curtis Petersen (2-5) struck out five and allowed only two hits but lasted only 32/ 3 innings and was charged with four earned runs.
State College starter Phillip Irwin and reliever Nelson Pereira (4-5), however, combined to scatter seven hits through the first eight innings. Jamestown (26-38) scored its only run on a solo home run by Austin Markel in the third inning.
The top of the first inning was a sign of things to come. Evan Chambers drew a leadoff walk, Ty Summerlin reached on an error by shortstop Jose Torres and Justin Byler was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Baker then grounded to second, scoring Chambers and forcing out Byler, but Torres’ throw to first was errant, allowing Summerlin to score and Baker to advance to second. Baker later came in to score on David Rubinstein’s single to left.
The Spikes (33-31) picked up two more runs in the fourth inning without a base hit. Miguel Mendez, Kyle Saukko and Ty Summerlin drew walks to load the bases. Wilson Matos relieved Petersen and threw a wild pitch to Byler, scoring Mendez. Byler eventually drew a walk and Baker knocked in another run with the fifth walk of the inning.
Baker hit a leadoff triple in the seventh and scored on Pat Irvine’s single. In the ninth, Byler and Baker singled and Irvine walked to load the bases, and Byler and Baker each raced home on wild pitches by Brandon Barrow.
Baker was the only Spike to record multiple hits, but each of the first six hitters in the lineup had a base hit.
The three-game series resumes at 7:05 p.m. tonight.
Note: The Spikes placed infielder Andy Vasquez on the seven-day disabled list and brought up infielder Elevys Gonzalez from the Gulf Coast League Pirates.
