closeBATAVIA, N.Y. — The extra infield practice the State College Spikes took after Sunday's home loss to Williamsport didn't help when it counted Monday.
State College made errors in each of the last two innings as Batavia rallied for an 8-7 New York-Penn League baseball triumph. Kyle Conley’s one-out single drove in Ryan Jackson with the game-winner, capping the Muckdogs’ two-run ninth.
Trailing 7-5, Batavia (36-34) scored an unearned run in the eighth aided by a Brock Holt error and a bases-loaded walk from reliever Marc Baca.
In the ninth, Devin Goodwin led off with a double and scored when Baca (1-3) threw away Jack-son’s sacrifice bunt. Jackson ended up at second. After a popup and an intentional walk to Matt Adams, Conley lined a single to left to end the game.
Adams, a former Philipsburg- Osceola High School standout, belted a three-run double in a four-run first inning as the Muckdogs erased a 3-0 Spikes lead.
State College (34-36) rebounded via the longball in the fifth. Justin Byler blasted his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot to give the Spikes a 5-4 lead. David Rubinstein followed with a blast to left-center for his third longball of the season.
Rubinstein had a big night, finishing a single shy of hitting for the cycle. Byler, Elevys Gonzalez and Evan Chambers had two hits each for the Spikes, who finished with 11. Conley had three hits, including his sixth home run of the season, for the Muckdogs.
Starter Phillip Irwin had his worst outing for State College. The All-Star gave up four runs and four hits and got just two batters out in the first inning before being lifted.
Nelson Pereira was outstanding for the Spikes, pitching four hitless innings of relief, while walking two and striking out nine.
