WINGATE — Bellefonte rallied from a 12-6 deficit in the fifth set to slip past Bald Eagle Area 21-25, 25-17, 18-25, 25-15, 16-14 Thursday night in Mountain League girls’ volleyball.
The Lady Red Raiders (8-1), whose only loss in the first half of league play has been to defending District 6 champion Philipsburg-Osceola, had to play near-flawless during the final point to close the gap.
“It was pretty amazing,” Bellefonte coach Chad Weight said. “They played really tough and forced us into a lot of mistakes. In the fifth set we played aggressive without the errors.”
Kaity Clouser and Jena Matter led the Lady Raider offense with 15 kills apiece. Clouser also had 11 digs and four aces while Emily Putnam posted 33 assists and Jenna Robb turned in five blocks.
BEA (6-3) was led by Kaitlyn Miller’s 12 kills and four blocks, Nicole Reese’s six kills and eight digs, Kendra Fetzer’s 16 digs and Kelsey Shaw’s four assists.
Penns Valley tops Central Mountain
MILL HALL — Penns Valley earned a tough four-set win over Central Mountain on Thursday 25-18, 25-20, 18-25, 26-24.
Maria Andrews led the way for Penns Valley (4-5) with 20 kills, two blocks, and 10 digs. Morgan Holsopple also contributed 18 digs. Taylor Poorman gave out 21 assists.
The next match for Penns Valley will be home against Indian Valley on Monday.
Lady Little Lions win
HOLLIDAYSBURG — State College swept Hollidaysburg 25-9, 25-10, 25-13 Thursday.
State College’s Kelsey Kirsch had a team-high nine kills along with six digs and five aces. Maggie Harding was the team leader in digs with 12 to go along with five aces.
State College will host its Little Lion Varsity Invitational today and Saturday in the North Building gym. The 16-team field will also include Bellefonte, Bald Eagle Area and state-ranked Susquehannnock, Nativity and Spring Grove. Play begins at 5:30 p.m. today.

Bellefonte trounces Tyrone
TYRONE — Bellefonte took out Tyrone in convincing fashion Thursday by the score of 7-0.
Erika Walker started the scoring at the 30:52 mark with an assist from Jillian Musser and the Lady Raiders never looked back. Kristin Buchannon was a multiple-goal scorer for Bellefonte (8-3), netting two in the second half. Musser also added a goal. Bellefonte outshot Tyrone 36-0.
Indian Valley will visit next on Monday.

Eagles oust Mounties
PHILIPSBURG — Josh Schall’s two goals and Josh Snyder’s 11 saves in goal Thursday helped push Bald Eagle Area past Philipsburg-Osceola 3-0.
Schall scored twice during a five-minute span to finish the first half for a 2-0 Eagle lead. In the 70th minute, Brian Robison scored off an assist from Schall.
State College blanks Williamsport
WILLIAMSPORT — State College overcame a scoreless first half to beat Williamsport 3-0 Thursday.
David Trunzo finally started the scoring for the Little Lions (4-3) in the 60th minute with an assist from David Gaetano. The second goal came three minutes later from Robbie Edwards with an assist from Andy Blunk. The final goal was scored by Bernard Avoulou in the 74th minute, compliments of Kelton Cheney. The shutout was a joint effort registered by Clay Bark-man and Greg Payne.
The next game for the Little Lions is in the Mid-State Cup Tournament in Hershey on Saturday.
Tyrone gets past Bellefonte
BELLEFONTE — Bellefonte took an early one-goal lead but three straight first-half goals by Tyrone proved to be enough Thursday as the Golden Eagles edged the Red Raiders 3-2.
Following a Bellefonte goal by Brandon Richards just five minutes into the game, Tyrone’s Mathia Palaia tied the game with a penalty kick in the 12th minute.
Cooper Campbell then put Tyrone up by a goal less than two minutes later, followed by Palaia’s second goal at 22:40 for a 3-1 Golden Eagle lead. Brett Boatman answered for Bellefonte at 23:47 to finish the scoring.

State College falls to Greenwood
STATE COLLEGE — Despite scoring first, the State College field hockey team came up short against Greenwood while falling 2-1 Thursday.
The goal for the Lady Little Lions (8-3, 7-2 Tri-Valley League) came from Nadia Lehtihet at 19:37 of the first half.
Greenwood regrouped with a goal from Autumn Pellman at 14:11 of the first half. Pellman would also score the game-winner in the second half at the 27:21 mark.
GIRL'S CROSS COUNTRY
Miller, Davidson pace BEA
MOUNT UNION — Kara Miller and Lauryn Davidson placed second and third, respectively, for Bald Eagle Area on Thursday but fell 15-50 to Mount Union due to not having enough runners competing.
Miller finished in 24 minutes, 16 seconds and Davidson claimed a time of 24:46.
BOY'S CROSS COUNTRY
Bracken, Miller lead Eagles
MOUNT UNION — BEA’s Luke Bracken placed third and Keith Miller was fourth Thursday but Mount Union still won 15-50 because the Eagles fielded a team of just four runners.
Bracken finished in 20 minutes, 45 seconds while Miller ran a 20:45.
