INDIANA — Matt Fisher sat by himself on the grass near the third base line as the dugout emptied on another season.
The Bellefonte star leaned back on his hands and stared far into the distance.
What was he looking for? Maybe for an answer as to why the Red Raiders’ sterling season came to a crushing conclusion here, so close to the ultimate prize.
“This one sucks big time, knowing it’s the last game I’ll play in high school,” Fisher said from his position on the grass after Bellefonte fell 3-1 to upstart Chartiers Valley in a PIAA Class AAA baseball semifinal on Monday afternoon at White Township Park.
“It sucks because we were so close,” Fisher continued. “Two runs. Two runs separated it.”
Two runs will withhold the Red Raiders from their first trip to a state championship game. Two runs will maintain the 1987 team’s third-place PIAA finish as the measuring stick Bellefonte groups will continue to aim to surpass.
The circumstances were tough to swallow for the players on this team, the ones who believed their destiny would bring them to Altoona’s Blair County Ballpark on championship Friday.
“We were so much better than what we played today,” senior Seth Tressler said.
