closeST. MARYS — Things didn’t go quite as planned for Bellefonte in its season opener Friday night in St. Marys, as the Flying Dutchmen pounded out 406 yards on the ground in a 51-12 victory.
St. Marys took the opening kickoff and marched 69 yards on 11 plays to give the Red Raiders a preview of what was to come on the night. Kevin Hoy ran for 40 of his game-high 168 yards on the drive, which was capped by a 20-yard pass by Greg Simchick to Brian Samick.
Bellefonte picked up two first downs in its first series, but was forced to punt. A bad snap on the punt set up the Dutch with a short field and St. Marys punched it in again early in the second quarter to make it a 14-0 game.
St. Marys scored on four of its five possessions in the first half with the only non-scoring drive ending in Bellefonte territory at the halftime buzzer.
Hoy, who ran for 162 yards on 23 carries in the first half, scored twice in the second quarter on runs of six and five yards. Samick capped the first-half scoring for the Dutch with a 48-yards touchdown grab on a screen pass. Samick ran for 107 yards in the game with a score and caught three passes for 77 yards and two mores touchdowns.
Bellefonte’s lone score in the first half came in the second quarter with the Red Raiders trailing 22-0. Quarterback Ty Warner hit Matt Watson on a slant and Watson did the rest, outrunning the Dutch defense for an 84-yard score.
The score accounted for most of Bellefonte’s yardage in the first half as it amassed just 34 yards on its other 18 plays.
St. Marys tacked on two more scores in the third to take a 44-6 lead before Bellefonte mounted a 61-yard scoring drive late in the third that carried over into the fourth against the Dutch reserves. Warner connected on passes of 14 and 22 yards on the drive, which was capped by a three-yard run by Nate Shultz.
Warner ended the game 5 of 16 passing for 144 yards and the one score as the Red Raiders compiled 212 yard on total offense in the game. Watson had two grabs for 95 yards.
St. Marys added a late 65-yard scoring run to set the final.
“I told the kids after the game that you’re never as good as you think you are, and you’re never as bad as you might look,” said Red Raiders coach Zac Wynkoop. “We had a lot of kids make their first varsity start tonight and we have to keep working hard to get better.
“St. Marys is a good team and well-coached, and they’re going to give some people problems.”
Bellefonte (0-1) travels to Brookville on Friday. Brookville beat Union 54-34 Friday night.
