closeBROOKVILLE — Bellefonte coach Zac Wynkoop’s return to his hometown ended in thrilling fashion as the Red Raiders defeated Brookville 40-34 in double overtime on Friday night.
Quarterback Ty Warner rolled out to his left on a third-and- goal from the 8- yard line, and found Matt Watson in the end zone for Bellefonte’s first victory of 2009 after consecutive weeks of playing District 9 schools.
“I knew it was going to be a dogfight,”Wynkoop said. “I have so much respect for coach (Chris) Dworek and his program. I can’t imagine what one of our players feels like. I’m drained.”
After a scoreless first quarter, Bellefonte fell behind by two touchdowns before responding with 21 unanswered points to take a 21-20 lead in the third. Brookville drove into Bellefonte midway through the quarter, but the Red Raider defense forced a turnover with a fumble recovery.
Three plays later, Warner hit Watson, who elevated to make the catch and he raced down the
sidelines for a
70-yard touchdown.
Brookville tied it up on the ensuing possession, and quarterback Garrett Weaver called his own number to convert the two-point conversion.
The teams traded touchdowns in the first overtime.
Brookville scored on a fake field goal down. Tyler Dombrowski took the snap and he rolled out to his left to find Josh Frondeck in the end zone. A fake extra-point left Bellefonte’s deficit at six.
Bellefonte answered the bell on fourth down when Weaver connected with Zach Tressler in the back of the end zone. The Red Raiders, however, were unable to connect on the extra point.
Brookville had a chance to win the contest in regulation, but kicker A.J. Moore missed a 27-yard field as time expired.
Warner completed 6-of- 13 passes for 121 yards. Four of his completions went for touchdowns.
Malik Breon had a 15-yard touchdown reception. Breon also put Bellefonte on the board with a 80-yard kickoff return in the second quarter to make it 14-7. He added an interception on defense.
Brookville jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the second quarter on touchdown passes from Tyler Dombrowski and Garrett Weaver.
Dombrowski connected with Dustin Dombrowski for a 56-yard strike early in the frame and then Weaver found Taylor Heinrich down the middle on fourth-and- goal for a 30-yard score.
The Red Raiders cut their deficit in half on the ensuing kickoff when Breon fielded the low kick at the 20 before breaking up the middle and to the outside down the sideline for the touchdown.
Breon setup the second touchdown after he intercepted a pass by Warner down the sideline. Bellefonte capitalized on the Brookville turnover when Torin Miller pulled down Warner’s pass in the back of the end zone on fourth down.
Travis Struble led Bellefonte in rushing with 16 carries for 65 yards. Struble had a 4-yard score to give the Red Raiders a 21-20 lead midway through the third.
