SPRING MILLS — Penns Valley managed just two hits in its baseball season-opener as the Rams fell 12-2 in six innings against Lewistown on Monday.
Lewistown led 4-2 through five innings until erupting for eight runs in the top of the sixth. Nick Beamenderfer's two-run single was the big hit in the outburst, which was aided by a pair of Penns Valley errors.
Beamenderfer, Brody Blessing and Thomas Walters had two hits each for the winners.
Jesse Kieffer and Sam Snyder each had a single for the Rams. StarterKevin Montminy took the loss, despite allowing just two earned runs in four innings.
The Rams travel to Central Mountain on Wednesday.
Bellefonte pounds Central
MARTINSBURG — Bellefonte pounded out 15 hits, including six in a six-run seventh inning as the Red Raiders routed Central 13-3.
Seth Tressler and Frank Parkes each had two-run singles in the seventh as Bellefonte (2-0) iced the game.
For the second consecutive game, Eric Regel had three hits. Regel smacked a triple and a two-run homer Monday. Matt Fisher also had three hits, including a double. Tressler and Parkes each had two hits and drove in three.
“Our hitting is where we want it to be,” said Bellefonte coach Denny Leathers, whose club has scored 23 runs in two games. “I hope it can continue.”
Cole McClarren (1-0) tossed a seven-hitter for the Red Raiders. McClarren walked three and struck out one. “He kept the ball in play and threw strikes for the most part,” Leathers said. “I thought we played very well defensively, even though we had a couple of errors.”
Bellefonte plays host to Huntingdon on Wednesday.
BEA, Indian Valley deadlocked
BURNHAM — Bald Eagle Area rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh as the Eagles forged a 9-9 tie against Indian Valley in the season opener for both teams Monday. The game will likely be resumed when the two teams meet at Wingate later in the season.
“We had opportunities to put the game away,” Bald Eagle Area coach Jim Gardner said. “We couldn’t come up with the one big hit when we needed it. ... We were actually fortunate to get two in the seventh to tie it.”
BEA’s top and bottom of the lineup was very productive. Leadoff hitterToby Quickhad three hits and drove in four, and No. 8 hitterMark Kotzuradded three singles. No. 2 hitterDerek Jabcoand No. 9 Evan Gettig each had two hits.
Nick Eversole belted a three-run homer to pace the Warriors.
