closeSPRING MILLS — Collin Smithhit the game-winning, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning Monday as the Penns Valley baseball team picked up its first win of the season with a 3-2 triumph over Huntingdon.
Trailing 2-0 entering the Rams’ last at-bat, sophomore newcomerJohn Downie along withIsaac Balbanled off the seventh with two straight walks off Huntingdon starter Nathan Betts, who was replaced by Addison Yingling. Jesse Kieffergreeted Yingling with a run-scoring double to score Downie.
The Bearcats then intentionally walkedKevin Montminy to load the bases before Smith worked a 3-2 count and then singled to right field, scoring pinch-runnerNick Bressler and Kieffer.
“The entire game, we were knocking on the door but we kept leaving runners on,” said Penns Valley coach Kerry Shawley, whose Rams stranded a combined eight baserunners in the second, third and fourth innings. “Collin and Jesse have been coming up big for us all year. It was a real good at-bat for Collin. It was a long at-bat.”
Montminy (1-3) threw a three-hitter on the mound for Penns Valley (1-6).
“Montminy just threw great,” added Shawley. “This was everything we expect of Kevin. He’s starting to get some innings now, this was his fourth start. He had command of all of his pitches today.”
Jared Donelson plated Scott Minor on a two-run home run in the first to account for the Bearcat’s only runs.
P-O rallies late to take Tyrone
PHILIPSBURG — Philipsburg- Osceola exploded for all six of its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning Monday to take down Tyrone 6-3.
In the fifth, P-O’sLuke Curtis andStorm Bumbargereach walked,Kody Bennettsingled andHayden Haywarddrew a bases-loaded walk.Zack Czap andMike Marcinkofollowed with back-to-back two-run singles, followed byPaul Hahn’s run-scoring single.
Curtis (3-1) yielded just one earned run over seven innings, allowing 10 hits and striking out eight.
Little Lions hang on
ST. MARYS — St. Marys had the tying run at the plate in its final at-bat Monday, but State College relief pitcherBen Sallade recorded a strikeout before picking off a Flying Dutchmen baserunner to secure a 10-8 Little Lion victory.
State College (4-1) tied the game at 5-5 in the fourth inning afterMatt Frytripled and scored onShane Regel’sdouble, asJustin O’Brienplated Regel on a single. Regel went on to belt a bases-loaded double in the fifth andScott Glass sparked a two-run sixth with a leadoff home run.
Brett Quiggle helped give the Dutch a 5-1 lead with his grand slam in the second off Little Lion starterMatt Godwin.Later while trailing 10-5 in the seventh, St. Marys scored three runs before Sallade ended the rally.
Sallade (1-0) tossed five innings in relief for the win, allowing six hits with eight strikeouts. JJ Bilodeau allowed nine hits and six runs over four innings in the losing effort for St. Marys.

State College hammers St. Marys
STATE COLLEGE —Megan Brown tossedfive no-hit innings andKirsten Glantzwent 3-for-4 as State College rebounded from last week’s loss to Jersey Shore by defeating St. Marys 10-0 in six innings Monday.
Glantz sparked State College (4-1)early, hitting a two-run homer in the top of the first. Glantz added two singles later in the game.
The run support allowed Brown to breeze through five innings. Brown struck out five and walked two. St. Marys recorded its lone hit offShelby Klinein the sixth.
Kline andAnna Juskaadded two hits each for State College, which scored the winning run whenLindsey Millerwas hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth.
“For having a couple of days off and not playing it was nice to get a win,” State College coach Rick Hall said. “We were able to adjust to their pitching and have a good day at the plate.”
State College falls on road
MECHANICSBURG — State College allowed seven third-period goals on its way to a 16-0 loss at Cumberland Valley on Monday.
