closeSPRING MILLS — Rachel Myers hurled her second no-hitter of the season and blasted her third home run Tuesday as the Penns Valley softball team blanked Indian Valley 6-0 to complete its regular season.
The Lady Rams (13-4) got off to a quick start in the first as Alicia Leitch hit a leadoff double. Katie Deardorff followed with a single before Nicole Bowersox belted her first career home run for a 3-0 lead.
In the fifth, Leitch singled and scored on Myer’s home run which gave herself a five-run cushion to work with as she continued to fluster the Warriors over the final two frames.
No. 3-seeded Penns Valley will next host No. 6 West Branch on Monday at 4 p.m. in the District 6 Class AA quarterfinals.
State College bounces Altoona
STATE COLLEGE — Pitching for the first time in nearly three weeks, State College’s Shelby Kline tossed a three-hitter as the Lady Little Lions edged Altoona 3-1 Tuesday at Community Field.
Kline (3-2) struck out four and did not walk a batter in her first outing since being sidelined by an injury.
State College (12-4) snapped a 1-1 tie with two runs in the second. With two outs, Anna Juska singled, stole second base and scored on Emilee Eden’s single. Eden took second on the throw to the plate and scored when Altoona erred on Kirsten Glantz’s hot shot.
Glantz, who had a first-inning RBI single, and Juska had two hits each for State College, which travels to DuBois today.
BOY'S TENNIS
State College advances
ALTOONA — Chris Borden and Blake Gregory scored impressive singles victories in helping State College to a 4-1 victory over Allderdice in a PIAA Class AAA first round matchup on Tuesday.
Borden downed Chris Morris and Gregory defeated Fischbach. Both matches were won 6-0, 6-0.
The Little Lions doubles teams of Anurag Kumar and Alex Gregory, and Josh Sherry and Matthew Crain both won 6-0, 6-1.
State College will next meet Abington, the fourth seed out of District 1, in the PIAA Class AAA quarterfinals Friday at 5 p.m. at the Hershey Raquet Club. Abington defeated Central York 4-1 Tuesday in its first round match.
Allderdice’s Max Schemin beat Alex Robinson 7-5, 6-0 at first singles.
BASEBALL
Altoona edges State College
ALTOONA — Christian Helsel went 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored to key Altoona to a 4-2 victory over State College on Tuesday.
Craig McCloskey scattered seven hits over seven innings for the Mountain Lions.
Will Pryor led the Little Lions (11-6) with four hits. He had a solo home run and drove in Shane Regel with a single.
Matt Godwin (2-2) threw six innings for the Little Lions. He registered five strikeouts while allowing eight hits and one walk.
Lewistown tops Bellefonte
BELLEFONTE — Bellefonte scored four runs in its final at-bat Tuesday but it wasn’t enough as Lewistown survived for a 9-8 victory.
Brody Blessing had four hits, stole three bases and drove in three runs to lead the Panthers (10-10), who avenged an earlier loss to the Red Raiders (14-6).
Matt Fisher hit two home runs and knocked in four runs to lead Bellefonte. Robert Gummo added a homer and Seth Tressler and Brandon Quay each had two hits and an RBI for the Red Raiders.
Tressler and Ethan Kline each had RBI singles in the seventh inning and Fisher followed with a two-run homer. Frank Parkes singled, but Bellefonte left the tying run on first.
The teams face off again on Thursday in a District 6 Class AAA quarterfinal in Bellefonte at 4 p.m.
Warriors pound Rams
MILROY — Indian Valley’s Joe McElwain drove in five runs as the Warriors had two eight-run innings Monday in a 16-4 victory over Penns Valley in five innings.
McElwain highlighted an eight-run second with a two-run double and later added a three-run home run during an eight-run frame in the fourth.
Jesse Kieffer led Penns Valley with a three-run home run in the fourth, his second of the season.
Brian Billett doubled and was the winning pitcher for Indian Valley.
GIRL'S LACROSSE
Lady Little Lions roll
STATE COLLEGE — State College jumped out to a 10-goal halftime lead en route to a 14-2 thumping of Midd-West on Monday.
Kayla Foster led State College (7-7) with three goals, Emma Stevenson, Julia Marsala and Jackie Kenney each notched two goals while Tiffany Card, Becca Wagner, Jess Bonnett and Sandra Cannon each added a goal.
Kate Small saved seven shots in goal for State College.
