closeBELLEVILLE — The Penns Valley boys’ soccer team dominated play in blanking Belleville Mennonite 3-0 Friday night in the Rams’ season opener.
Tyler Silks, Calub Luse and Tyler Long all scored goals for the Rams, who advanced to the finals of the Belleville Tournament. They will face District 3’s Halifax at noon today in the tournament championship. Anthony Glossner assisted on the goals for Silks and Luse.
“We played a nice control game,” Rams coach Scott Case said. “We attacked their edges and had some beautiful crosses, like the one from Glossner right to Calub Luse’s head. He put it right into the net.”
Nate Sweeley made two saves in the Rams’ net to earn the shutout.

Hughesville upends Penns Valley
HUGHESVILLE — Penns Valley dropped its opening match of the season Friday night, falling 2-1 to the hosts at the Hughesville Tournament. Carolyn Darr accounted for the Lady Rams’ goal at 29:06 from Heather Holmes. They will face Jersey Shore at 4 p.m. today.
Hughesville, with two goals earlier in the first half, outshot Penns Valley 18-5 as Robin Siegenthaler made eight saves.
“Despite the loss I was pleased with our effort and intensity,” Lady Rams coach Jeff Wiest said. “This was the first time since the beginning of the season I had seen that.”
