closeST. MARYS — There was very little that was pleasant for Penns Valley as it traveled to St. Marys on Friday.
A long bus trip, dismal weather and an offense that struggled to move the ball. All three factors added up to a 34-0 loss to the Flying Dutchmen.
It took over two hours for the Rams to make the trip only to be greeted by nearly constant rain showers. That rain certainly didn’t help the Penns Valley offense as it accounted for less than 100 total yards.
If that wasn’t bad enough, there were the turnovers.
The Rams (1-4) fumbled 13 times, including several times deep in their own territory. They lost four of those fumbles. The mistakes limited Penns Valley to just seven first downs.
The Rams also lost 56 yards on seven penalties while gaining just 64 offensive yards on 41 plays. Kody Bjalme had the best effort for the Rams, rushing 15 times for 34 yards.
Kevin Hoy led St. Marys (4-1) with 147 yards on 18 carries. The Dutch, who also defeated Bellefonte and Bald Eagle Area, used 12 players to rush for 247 yards.
Both teams failed to score on their opening drives, but St. Marys started to take the game over on its second drive, moving more than 80 yards for its first score on the opening play of the second quarter. The Dutch then held the Rams on their next drive and moved into the end zone for the second time on another rushing score by Hoy to make it 14-0.
St. Marys finished the game off in the third quarter, scoring touchdowns on all three of its drives. The Dutch started their third-quarter scoring on Hoy’s 64-yard touchdown run. Hoy scored four times, also crossing the end zone on two-and 11-yard runs in the second quarter. His final score came on a four-yard run with 14 seconds left in the third.
Austin Auman gained 18 yards on four carries for the Rams while quarterbacks Matt Helm and Sam Snyder combined to complete 4 of 11 passes for 38 yards. Kyle Schneider added 47 yards on eight carries for the Dutch. St. Marys quarterback Greg Simchick completed his only pass.
Penns Valley will host Philipsburg-Osceola on Friday. The Rams have lost three straight since a Week 2 victory over Bald Eagle Area.
