closeERIE — The State College boys’ lacrosse team used a late goal byJohn Laytonto get past Erie Cathedral Prep 7-6 before running past Erie McDowell 12-5 in a doubleheader Saturday.
Against Cathedral Prep, the Little Lions’ Mike Gaetanotied the game at 6-6 with 6:26 left in the game off an assist from
Brandon Graham.Layton followed quickly with the go-ahead goal with 4:52 left offPavel Douvensky’sassist.
“I thought they were a good team from what I saw on paper,” said State College coach Jeff King about Cathedral Prep. “We knew they could move the ball but our defense dominated on the ground balls and I think that was a big key.”
Gaetano and Layton each tallied two goals, Graham scored once withJon Niles andAndy Jamesoneach adding a goal.
In the second game, State College (10-8) jumped on McDowell (4-11) early with four goals in the first quarter en route to grabbing a 6-0 halftime lead as McDowell never threatened.
“They weren’t able to clear the ball against our ride,” King said about McDowell. “Whenever you can ride a team well, it obviously helps your offense a lot.”
Gaetano had a hat trick in the second game,Gus Sommer,Layton and Niles each added two goals with Graham, Jameson andAron Griffineach scoring a goal each.
In goal for the Little Lions,Dan Jordan totaled 17 saves combined over both games.
