SCHOLASTIC DIGEST State College edges Mifflinburg in tiebreaker
From CDT staff reports
STATE COLLEGE — Kirsten Glantz lined a two-out single up the middle in the bottom of the 12th inning to drive home the winning run in the State College softball team’s 4-3 victory over Mifflinburg on Monday at Community Fields.
Carly Reeder’s solo home run in the bottom of the sixth sent the game into extra innings. In the 10th, the international tiebreaker rule took effect with a runner starting at second base.
Mifflinburg (10-5) scored in the 11th, but State College tied the game on Jess Shisler’s two-out single. Shisler, who was thrown out stealing to end the 11th, started the 12th at second and moved to third on Alexa Becker’s sacrifice bunt. After a strikeout and a walk to Emilee Eden, Glantz, who leads the Lady Little Lions in average and RBIs, drilled the game-winner against Mifflinburg ace Emily Crandell.
Megan Brown (9-2) allowed two first-inning runs, including a solo home run to Amy Cline, but finished with a five-hitter. She walked one and struck out nine. Haley Brown, Reeder and Shisler had three hits each to pace State College’s 13-hit attack.
“Megan missed on a couple pitches in first inning, but after that she threw a heck of a game,” State College coach Rick Hall said, “It was one of the few times we’ve been down early and come back. We hung tough and made key plays and got the key hits we needed.”
State College (11-4) plays host to Altoona at 4:30 p.m. today.
