STATE COLLEGE — Two goals midway through the first half gave the State College boys’ soccer team the start it needed to knock off rival Altoona 3-0 Thursday night at Memorial Field.
David Trunzo scored the first goal in the 21st minute from Jake Langton, then Aron Griffin sent the ball to Mike Gaetano for a long blast from a tight angle four minutes later. Kelton Cheney added the insurance goal two minutes into the second half.
“We got the shut out and the job done,” State College coach John Marsden said. “Any time we play that team they never give up and hustle all the way to the end. I wasn’t even comfortable even at 3-0. They had some chances.”
Clay Barkman and Greg Payne combined to make three saves for the shutout.
Central Mountain stops P-O
PHILIPSBURG — George Riccardo scored twice, including one 2:10 into the game, as Central Mountain defeated Philipsburg-Osceola 4-0 Thursday.
Ben Kitko and Zach Moldovan also scored for the Wildcats (10-2). P-O goalie Josh Cowher stopped seven shots. The Mounties compiled eight shots and held a 5-4 corner kick advantage.
Paul, Streit power Grace Prep
STATE COLLEGE — Minsu Kang and Smith Paul found the net a minute apart early in the first half as Grace Prep dropped Juniata Mennonite on Thursday.
John Rothgeb assisted Paul on a pair of goals while Davis Streit also netted two goals for the Storm (8-2). Tim Ososkie assisted on one of Streit’s goals.
Joe Barner and Kyle Kell scored for Juniata Mennonite past Lathom Thompson, who made 10 saves.
Penns Valley downs Indian Valley
BURNHAM — Penns Valley needed only 40 seconds to decide its eventual 3-0 win over Indian Valley on Thursday.
The quick early goal came from John Downie with an assist from Tyler Silks. The Rams (10-1) would then score three minutes later, with an unassisted goal from Anthony Glossner. The final goal came at the 29:13 mark of the first half, again unassisted, from McCade Lynch. Nate Sweeley recorded the clean sheet for the Rams, stopping the only shot he faced.
The next match for Penns Valley will be Saturday at home against Central Mountain.
GIRL'S SOCCER
Bellefonte breaks wins record
BELLEFONTE — Thanks to two goals in the first two minutes of the game, Bellefonte beat Huntingdon 2-1 Thursday and broke the school record for wins in a season.
With five games still to play in their regular season, the Lady Red Raiders (10-3) broke the record set several times including with last year’s team (9-6-4).
Colby Sinclair set up Devin Kos with the first score 36 seconds into the game, then Erika Walker assisted Kristin Buchanan on the second goal at 1:48.
“We went out strong, passed the ball well and put it in the back of the net,” Bellefonte coach Stacey Miller said.
Abby Newman made it stand up at the other end with three saves, giving up only Rachel Woods’ goal early in the second half.
Juniata Mennonite blanks Grace Prep
STATE COLLEGE — Juniata Mennonite shut out Grace Prep 4-0 Thursday.
Carley Burns, Jenny Zimmerman, Taylor Marker and Marybeth Barner scored the goals for Juniata Mennonite.
Meagan Fox made 17 saves in net for the Lady Storm (4-6).
Bald Eagle Area >comes up short
WINGATE — Bald Eagle Area struggled in a 1-0 loss to West Branch on Thursday.
The lone goal of the game came from West Branch’s Arielle Maines at the 78:05 mark. Chelsea Lucas was a bright spot for the Lady Eagles (3-8), stopping eight of the nine shots she faced. BEA outshot West Branch 16-9.
Central Mountain blanks P-O
MILL HALL — Philipsburg- Osceola failed to find the net in a 3-0 loss to Central Mountain on Thursday.
The combination of Jackie Rodabaugh and Morgan Walker proved to be too much for the Lady Mounties (6-7-1), with each tallying two points. The first goal came from Rodabaugh with an assist from Walker at the 26:47 mark, and they reversed rolls for a goal at 37:35. The final goal came from Samantha Lofton at 52:20.
Keeper Amanda Czar recorded 14 saves for the Lady Mounties.
GIRL'S GOLF
Lady Mounties capture league title
HARRIS TWP. — Philipsburg- Osceola claimed its first Mountain League title by shooting a team score of 410 Thursday at the State College Elks Club.
Bellefonte finished second at 420 while Penns Valley shot a 520.
Mo Wittersled P-O with a 96 followed by Morgan Coble at 97. Hannah Wardo (108) and Megan Burns(109) completed the Lady Mounties’ top four.
Alyssa Sinclair led Bellefonte with a 100. Nicole Bowersox’s 104 paced Penns Valley.
Tyrone’s Olivia Stevers earned medalist honors by shooting 82.
The teams will return to the Elks Club next Wednesday for the opening round of the District 6 Championships.
BOY'S GOLF
Hollidaysburg edges State College
COLLEGE TWP. — Hollidaysburg shot a four-player score of 316 to edge State College’S 319 during a tri-meet Thursday at Centre Hills.
Nate Frey led the Little Lions (13-1), who suffered their first dual defeat, by shooting a 6-over par 78. Tanner Curley also broke 80, carding a 7-over 79. Graham Nye and Drew Morris both shot 81 for State College. Hollidaysburg’s Mike Macionsky earned medalist honors by firing a 75.
Both teams defeated Altoona, which shot a 380. The event was the final tuneup for next week’s District 6 Championships at Scotch Valley.
FIELD HOCKEY
State College blanks East Juniata
STATE COLLEGE — State College picked up a solid 3-0 win Thursday over East Juniata.
The eventual game-winner for the Lady Little Lions (11-4, 9-3 Tri-Valley) came unassisted from Amanda Dinunzio at the 9:35 mark of the first half. Dinunzio would also add the insurance goal in the second half at 4:21 with an assist from Naughtia Lehtiatt. The final nail in the coffin came from Jackie Kenney at 2:18. The Lady Little Lions outshot East Juniata 23-3.
GIRL'S VOLLEYBALL
Fifth-set rally gives BEA victory
WINGATE — Bald Eagle Area fell behind twice in the final set but finished off a big rally to drop Central 23-25, 25-19, 25-22, 17-25, 15-12 Thursday.
The Scarlet Dragons jumped ahead 5-1 to open the final frame, and after the Lady Eagles (9-3) rallied Central again pulled ahead 12-9 before BEA posted the final six points.
“Kayla Confer got an ace in there and finished it off on her serve,” Eagles coach Larry Campbell said. “We got them in a bad rotation and we were cooking a little bit.”
Kendra Fetzer had a big night with 15 kills, three blocks and three aces while Confer had 11 kills and eight digs. The Eagles also got 11 kills and five blocks from Katelyn Miller, five blocks from Kaitlin Miller, 35 assists and four aces from Kelsey Shaw, 14 digs and four aces from Nicole Reese and 17 digs from Courtney Switzer.
Bellefonte sweeps Tyrone
BELLEFONTE — Kaity Clouser produced 10 aces in leading Bellefonte to a 25-8, 25-10, 25-21 victory over Tyrone on Thursday.
Clouser also had 11 kills and six digs for the Red Raiders, who improved to 11-1.
Amber Haslet added eight aces and Emily Putnam dished out 16 assists for Bellefonte.
Philipsburg-Osceola cruises
PHILIPSBURG — Philipsburg-Osceola kept up their winning ways with a 25-10, 25-9 and 25-10 sweep of Penns Valley on Thursday.
The Lady Mounties (14-2, 11-0 Mountain League) were led by Taylor Harpster’s 11 kills and seven blocks. Also contributing for P-O was Natasha Frank, who had seven digs and three aces en route to 19 service points, while Kelsey Gonder gave out 26 assists.
