MIDDAY REPORT: Residents told not to attract bears; PSU champ to coach Maryland; Bolton workers get good news

Don't attract a bear in any way.

That's the message today from the state Game Commission Northcentral Region, as it investigates a bear attack on a woman walking her dog.

That Lycoming County attack was the top story read online yesterday, and the Game Commission warning is in response to it.

“It is important to remove all sources of food – whether it is food for wildlife or pets – or unsecured garbage from areas that are accessible to bears,” said Dennis Dusza, director of the Commission Northcentral Region.

PENN State's two-time NCAA champion wrestler Kerry McCoy is moving east.

McCoy, the head coach at Stanford for three years, is heading to Maryland to become head coach.

“Kerry McCoy is the right coach for Maryland at the right time,” said athletic director Deborah A. Yow.

Meanwhile, in Penn State coaching news, assistant hoops coach Kurt Kanaskie is staying with the Nittany Lions.

Kanaskie has withdrawn his name from consideration for the head coaching vacancy at Saint Francis, as reported today.

THERE'S good news for more than 300 Bolton Metal Products employees, as reported by Jennifer Thomas today.

They'll be eligible for additional benefits under the federal Trade Act, after the company's appeal petition was accepted by the U.S. Department of Labor.

OUR "Paycheck-to-Paycheck" series, published in November and still online, is in the news as reporters Anne Danahy and Chris Rosenblum received the Roy Sprigle Memorial Award from the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania.

The award recognizes what's judged as the best entry in any category by papers under 45,000 circulation.

The series won a Golden Quill award also, and reporters Jennifer Thomas and Mike Joseph too won Golden Quills for their work.
