Boston Marathon Challenge
CVIM Board Member and marathon runner John Domico will lead a team of local atheletes in the Boston Marathon. Their goal is to raise $65,000 which will provide free medical and dental care to Centre County residents without access to insurance.

John Domico
John Domico, a Penn State IT Director and instructor, will run his 11th marathon at Boston. John created the CVIM Boston Marathon Challenge 6 years ago. With the help of a stellar running community, the event has raised over $110,000 for CVIM’s patients. John’s goal this year is to avoid visiting the medical tent after finishing. According to John, “A post-race Guinness is much more enjoyable than a bag of I.V. drip.”Tom Cali
Tom Cali, State College real estate agent, has been a runner for 20 years. He says he has run in “16ish” marathons and this is his “7ish” time to run the Boston. Tom defies age. Most of his PR race times have been set after age 50.Kim Gasper
Kim Gasper, Special Education teacher from Bellefonte, has been a runner for 25 years and has participated in 10+ marathons. This will be her 9th time to run the Boston. She was motivated to join the CVIM Challenge Team by others that she runs with and also by the work done at CVIM. She would like to stay healthy and free from injuries – “My goal is to be able to run a race again where I determine how much I hurt!”Nate Harkins
Nate Harkins, a Penn State geology student, has been a runner for 16 years and participated in 7 marathons (twice in Boston). Nate enjoys the fun of being part of the CVIM Challenge Team and being able to help the cause. Quote from Nate: “I never thought I would run a marathon, and then I moved to State College and started hanging out with all the ‘old guys’ who are part of CVIM.” His funny running story: “I have raced in drag three times and under a different name more than five times.”Jen Herbstritt
Jen Herbstritt, a Physician’s Assistant in State College, is hoping to return to Boston for her second time. Last year, she joined us in support of CVIM. This year, we join her to run in memory and honor of her brother Jeremy. The Herbstritt family lost Jeremy at Virginia Tech as Jen was running Boston last year.Tom Hilands
Marty Klanchar
Marty Klanchar, research associate from State College, has been running for 32 years and has participated in 47 marathons. Marty says, “I’m 50 years old and hope to complete 50 marathons before I turn 51.” Marty is very supportive of the goals and efforts of CVIM and is glad to participate in raising funds for the important service CVIM provides to our community.Paul Lammert
Paul Lammert, a State College physicist, has been running for over 20 years but this will be his first time to run the Boston Marathon. He learned of the CVIM Boston Marathon Challenge from his Team-in-Training coach, Morgan Wasikonis.Mark Lee
Mark Lee, a software engineer from State College, has been running for 20 years and has participated in 14 marathons, but this will be his first time to run the Boston. Mark says he was motivated to join the CVIM Challenge Team by the opportunity to help others while doing something he enjoys, running.Costas Maranas
Costas Maranas, a Penn State professor from Thessaloniki, Greece, has been running for two years, and is running the Boston Marathon for the first time. When asked if he had a funny running story to share Costas says, “Others know funny stories about my running….my goal is to finish!”George Lesieutre
George Lesieutre is a professor and head of aerospace engineering at Penn State. He started running in 2001 "to avoid a heart attack on the trail while backpacking at Philmont with his two sons." He has run 3 marathons, including Boston for CVIM in 2006 and 2007. Although qualified for Boston, because of a schedule conflict, this year he will actually run the Charlottesville marathon for CVIM. The CVIM cause, along with the camaraderie and energy of the RecHall Regulars and the Nittany Valley Running Club are great motivators. Since George is turning 50 this year, Tom Cali is his running hero.Gregory Luna
Gregory Luna, a Penn State Archaeology graduate student from Hacienda Heights, CA, has been running for 27 years and has run in 4 marathons. This is his second time to run the Boston and he says, “I would like to kiss a Wellesley woman this year!”Dave Moore
Dave Moore, a graduate student in Neuroscience, is running his first Boston, and his second career marathon. Dave is likely a sub 2:30:00 marathoner, and looks as good running in a skirt as Nate.Ruth Mick
Ruth Mick, a Penn State Agronomy student from Zelionople, PA, has been running for 13 years, but this will be her first time running the Boston Marathon. Ruth learned about CVIM through the Nittany Valley Running Club. Ruth has been known to carry on a 20-minute cell phone conversation with her fiancé while running. Ah, young love!Paige Miller
Paige Miller, a graduate student/Research Assistant in Nutritional Sciences from Ambler, PA, has been running for 12 years and has participated in 2 other marathons, but this is her first time to run the Boston. She is motivated by the great people and the great cause. She says, “My goal is to run until I’m 85. At that point, I’m willing to stop!” Paige will be competing in the Women’s Olympic Marathon Trials at Boston.Tara Murray
Tara Murray, a librarian from Bellefonte, is running the Boston Marathon for the second year as part of the CVIM Challenge Team. Tara enjoys the fun of running a big event as part of a team and the opportunity to give back to the community by supporting CVIM. Story from Tara: “At Boston last year, I decided to make one last stop at the porta-potty and was still a 15-minute walk from the starting line when the gun went off. I ended up in the very crowded back of the crowd and was forced to run my first few miles much slower than my normal pace. At first I was frustrated, but then I decided to just relax and enjoy myself and not worry about my time. I ended up running a personal record!”Bob Radzwich
Bob Radzwich, a Certified Financial Planner originally from West Hazleton, has been running for 23 years and has run 7 marathons. This is Bob’s third year as a team member of the CVIM Challenge Team.Nina Safran
Nina Safran, a Penn State professor from Cambridge, MA, says, “A group of runners who ran in the evenings from Rec Hall welcomed me when I first moved to State College. I learned all about the area from running with them as they took me up and down mountains and shared their stories. I met some of my best friends through running.” She has participated in 9 marathons and this is her third time to run the Boston Marathon.Barb Schramm
Barb Schramm, an student in PSU’s Agribusiness Management program, is running Boston in her senior year at Penn State. In her farewell year at Penn State, Barb is leaving a lasting mark on community by running to help provide care for CVIM’s patients.Pamela Scott
Pamela Scott, an Educational Para originally from Waynesboro, PA, who now lives in Lemont, has been running two and one-half years and learned of CVIM from Greg Fredericks and stories in the Centre Daily Times. She gives her story, “Three years ago I had a goal to shed ‘some’ (113 lbs.) weight and make an effort to live a healthier life. I accomplished the weight goal, but when I saw the CVIM Boston Challenge, it made me want to set the bar higher as well as do something great for people in our community. I have been blessed with such an opportunity.”Aroline Seibert
Aroline Seibert, a Penn State graduate student in Hispanic Linguistics from Pembroke, MA, has been running “seriously” for 3 years, and has participated in 5 marathons, but hasn’t run the Boston before this year. Aroline says she is happy to be part of the CVIM Challenge Team and support a great local cause. She says, “Now that I’ve qualified, my goal is to enjoy it! John Sheakoski, an engineer from State College, has been running for 7 years and this will be his second time running the Boston Marathon. He enjoys the fact that so many of his fellow runners are also running on the CVIM Challenge Team.Jeff Smucker
Jeff Smucker, who works in Information Technology, has been a runner for 6 years, and in that time as participated in 8 marathons, but this will be his first time to run the Boston. He learned about CVIM from a doctor friend who volunteers at the clinic.Timothy Lee Spigelmyer

Joe and Sue Paterno to Coach CVIM Boston Marathon Team
Joe and Sue Paterno are supporting Centre Volunteers in Medicine (CVIM) is in its fifth year of raising money for the clinic through the 2008 CVIM Boston Marathon Challenge. The Nittany Valley Running Club is fielding four teams of Centre County’s finest runners to compete in the world’s most prestigious marathon on April 21, 2008.
Joe Paterno will once again be the team’s Head Coach. He will be joined by Sue Paterno as the Women’s Coach and Greg Fredericks, a local Track and Field Olympian, as the Men’s Coach.
The team, led by John Domico, CVIM Board Member and Marathon Runner, hopes to raise $65,000 to provide free medical and dental care for Centre County’s residents without access to insurance. ‘This event is unique in that 100% of the proceeds raised go to the clinic. Each runner solicits donation for their efforts to run the race. Everything else is donated.’
The runners will be joined by bicyclist, Roger Greene, who will bike 518 miles from Bellefonte to Boston.
Joe and Sue Paterno, Greg Fredericks and team members will be available for interviews and a photo shoot at Penn State University’s Multi-Sport Facility indoor track at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 7, 2008.
