closeU.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson, R-Howard Township, has announced thatHobart K. Kistler,of Centre Hall, has
accepted a fully qualified
appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
Kistler was ranked first in his class of 131 at Penns Valley Area High School, for which he was the president and a valedictorian at graduation this month. He had a 4.0 grade-point average. He was a national semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship program and a member of the National Honor Society. Kistler became an Eagle Scout in 2006, has served as an assistant scoutmaster and donated more than 400 hours in service to his community.
A son of the Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kistler, he has taken on a project that has evolved into a book. In 2004, he began interviewing veterans of World War II. Thus far, he has interviewed more than 90 veterans and produced 400 pages of their stories.
Erin Catalina Mooney,a daughter of Kevin and Antonia Mooney, of State College, graduated from Dickinson College on May 17 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology.
Mooney, a graduate of State College Area High School, was also named to the dean’s list for the spring semester.
LeighAnn Sammis,of Centre Hall, received a Bachelor of Fine Arts cum laude in art and design from the School of Art and Design at Alfred University on May 16.
Sammis, a daughter of Milicent Sammis and Leo Sammis, both of Centre Hall, is a graduate of Penns Valley Area High School.
Hannah Nicole Kessling,a first-grader at Clearfield County Alliance Christian School, has achieved high honor roll for the 2008-2009 school year. She is a daughter of Timothy and Kristin Kessling, of Philipsburg.
Hannah is on the Pre- Team at Nittany Gymnastics and is a Girl Scout Daisy of Troop 42111.
David and Mary Miller, of State College, was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Goshen College in Indiana.
Miller, a 2008 State College Area High School graduate, is a sophomore studying computer science and applied mathematics at Goshen.
Air Force Airman 1st Class Cole W. Johnson,a son of David and Linda Johnson, of
State College, recently graduated from basic military training at Lack-land Air
Force Base,
San Antonio. He earned distinction as an honor graduate.
Johnson received a bachelor’s degree in 2006 from Penn State Altoona.

Zachary R. King,of Danville, a grandson of Laura Faye King, of Bellefonte, was named to the dean’s list at Pennsylvania College of Technology for the spring semester.
King is pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in health information technology.
Joan Richtsmeier,of State College, was presented with the Alumna Achievement Award, awarded annually by the Alumnae Association, on June 6 at St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Ind.
Richtsmeier, who is an anthropology professor at Penn State, majored in sociology at St. Mary’s and went on to graduate school in anthropology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she received a master’s degree. She then attended Northwestern University for doctoral studies in anthropology. In 1986, Richtsmeier joined the faculty of the department of cell biology and anatomy at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, where she continued her research in craniofacial morphology and growth.
