UNIVERSITY PARK — Students in Penn State’s Smeal College of Business got to hear firsthand about India’s ambitious plans for education and its growing part in the global economy.
Daggubati Purandeswari, India’s minister of state for human resource development, gave a talk to business students and others Wednesday about India’s role in the “emerging global scenario.”
“The further continuation of this journey of ours will depend on how we actually leverage the advantages that we have and convert them into economic gain,” Purandeswari said.
Her talk covered not only the progress and growth the country has seen, but also the challenges it faces, including poverty and power outages.
Nirmal Pal, Smeal’s regional director for India, said in an e-mail that India is planning for a “massive expansion of their education infrastructure.”
Pal said that while Penn State won’t establish a campus outside of Pennsylvania, Purandeswari’s visit is an “opportunity to provide advice and counsel to Indian government and universities.”
