"Campout" Supports Area Food Banks

DuBois — The Campout for Hunger recently held by the Penn State DuBois Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) Club resulted in dozens of donations of canned food items, plus $641 in cash to benefit local food pantries. Club members camped out at the edge of campus along route 255 to encourage people to donate.

"There was at least a couple of hundred dollars worth of food donated," said HDFS Club member Brenda McGarvey. "The people in the community were so thoughtful."

The food and money collected will be split among food banks in DuBois, Brockway and Brookville. McGarvey explains, "We're donating to one food bank in each of the three surrounding counties. That way we're covering a larger area, and serving more of the population. "

"People are having a hard time staying afloat in these hard economic times," said McGarvey. "Food banks are a little hidden secret that can really help families that fall through the cracks."
