State College musician Marshall Biever will bring his take on the one-man band concept Feb. 20 to the Arena Bar & Grill, 1521 Martin St., State College.
Biever, a local native and former Berklee College of Music student, uses a foot-operated “loop station” to create layered, driving songs live. A funk aficionado, he records his slap bass, electric guitar, beat box and vocal riffs from scratch, then solos over his musical stew, harmonizing with himself.
Looping virtuoso Jarle Bernhoft, a fan of 1960s soul, serves as Beiver’s inspiration. “He really took that and give it a modern, forward-sounding structure and made it exciting with the looping,” Biever said.
Starting at 9 p.m., Biever also will play the guitar, his main instrument, straight for a mix of originals and covers, some solo, some backing his sister, Madeline Biever.
“It’s going to be a lot of groove-driven tunes,” he said.
