There are many drop-off recycling options available to Centre County residents. Each is addressed below.
Plastic, metal, glass, mixed paper and corrugated cardboard: There are more than 125 drop-off locations for plastic, metal, glass, paper and corrugated cardboard in Centre County. These locations help to serve residents who do not have access to curbside recycling. There is a flier on our website that lists the location of each drop-off container and the items that can be recycled at each location.

Miscellaneous plastics recycling: To date, there are four drop-off locations where miscellaneous plastic containers can be recycled. Each of the locations houses a marked red container:

Recyclable miscellaneous plastics include yogurt containers, margarine/butter tubs, cottage cheese and sour cream containers, dessert topping containers, strawberry/blueberry/raspberry containers, muffin/baked goods containers, lettuce/salad bar containers and plastic food storage containers, just to name a few. Electronics recycling: The Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority has an electronics recycling drop-off within the transfer station in Bellefonte. To recycle your electronics, follow the signs to the scale at gate No. 1 and tell the scale operator what items you have to recycle. The operator will then direct you to the drop-off location. The transfer station is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. This is a free service for Centre County residents. It is illegal to dispose of electronics with other trash.
Scrap metal and appliances: Scrap metal and appliances also are accepted at the transfer station. These items may be dropped off free of charge and include air conditioners, dehumidifiers, washers, dryers, dishwashers, furnaces, electrical heaters, water heaters, refrigerators, freezers, stoves and ovens.
Shingles: Roofing shingles can be dropped off at the transfer station at a discounted rate of $35 per ton. To qualify for this reduced rate, an acceptable load should include only shingles, nails and tar paper. Unacceptable items include any Kraft paper, wood, leaves, grass, tree limbs, flashing, coffee cups, cans or bottles. Loads containing these unacceptable items will be charged the normal MSW tipping fee of $67 per ton. Please let the scale operator know whether you have an acceptable load of shingles that qualifies for the reduced rate.
Vinyl siding: The recycling and refuse authority accepts post-consumer vinyl siding at the transfer station at a discounted rate of $20 per ton. To qualify for this reduced rate, the acceptable load should include only vinyl siding, corner posts and j-channel.
We cannot accept a load of vinyl siding at the reduced rate if it includes vinyl shutters, vinyl with insulation attached, organics, paper, wood, plastic, metal or glass. Loads containing any of these items will be charged the normal municipal solid waste tipping fee of $67 per ton. Let the operator know if you have an acceptable load of vinyl that would qualify for the reduced rate.
