The Turkish Cultural Center of Pennsylvania hosted a Ramadan tent dinner in downtown State College, featuring food and arts and crafts showcasing traditional Turkish goods.
Locust Lane between College Avenue and Calder Way was closed to traffic for the event, which began at sunset. During Ramadan, this year observed from June 28 through July 28, the devout fast until the sun sets each day.
But the celebration wasn’t only for the Islamic community; it was an opportunity to promote a culture, said Halil Okur, a TCC volunteer who helped organize the event.
It was about community outreach and education, said Okur, a Penn State doctoral student from Turkey. The event attracted about 250 people, he said.
