A motorist’s effort to avoid hitting a mother bear and her cub Wednesday afternoon ended in a fiery crash.
Police say Evan Felty, 50, of Rising Sun, Md., was driving northbound on state Route 44 in Gallagher Township, Clinton County, at 2:18 p.m. when he encountered the bears on the road. As he braked to avoid the animals, his Dodge Dakota was struck in the rear by a vehicle being driven by Crystal Felty, 48, of Rising Sun, Md.
After impact, police say the two vehicles traveled forward about 50 yards before coming to a final rest. Crystal Felty’s vehicle burst into flames as it came to a final stop.
No injuries were reported and no charges were filed, according to state police at Lamar.
