A former Penn State football player who was a part of the undefeated 1994-95 team and who now serves as a Pennsylvania state trooper was shot and injured in the line of duty Friday in Latrobe.
Trooper Brian King, a safety for Penn State from 1992-95, was shot in his protective face shield while attempting to end an 18-hour standoff with an armed robbery suspect who had holed up in a Latrobe home.
Police officials said the shield, which shattered after being struck by the bullet, may have saved King’s life. King underwent eye surgery after being taken to a Pittsburgh-area hospital. He was released from the hospital Saturday, according to a Penn State spokesperson.
State police identified the man inside the Latrobe home as Scott Murphy, 46.
